Apple Releases Details on iOS 5!
The first new feature is notifications. Notifications Center aggregates your notifications into one place and accessed by swiping down from the top, like on Android.
Newsstand is Apple’s new name for the subscription service. Newsstand is an app in itself, as a folder-meets-iBooks interface on the home screen.
Twitter is integrated. You sign in in settings and other apps can access them. Tweet from YouTube, Camera Roll, Safari, etc.
The rumoured iOS Reading List is also being brought across, allowing you to add pages to read later in a pop-up over your browsing window.
New MultiTouch Gestures involving 4+ fingers.
Tabbed browsing is being introduced too!
Reminders stores lists of things to, assigning tasks to a date and syncing with iCalendar.
There’s now a camera button on the lock screen for fast shooting. Plus, the volume up button can be used to snap pictures. Additionally, there’s pinch to zoom and AE/AF lock.
You can do photo editing in the stock Photos app like crop, rotating, red-eye reduction and one-click enhance.
There’s a new Dictionary feature that allows you to do OS X-style word lookups in any application. Tap a word, choose define and the dictionary overlay appears.
iPad is now entirely PC-free. We’re “cutting the cable” for iOS so they are true post-PC devices. You can setup your device right out of the box, without the need for iTunes. Software updates are over the air too in delta form, so they are much smaller and with no need to download the entire OS again. “If you want to cut the cord, you can”.
Game Center has 50 million users in nine months. Game Center is now a store in itself, allowing you to purchase games in Game Center alongside new friend discovery tools for finding people to play with.
iMessage introduces intra-iOS text and photo messaging in iOS 5, like BBM. Naturally, it integrates well with Apple’s new Notifications Center, working over WiFi or 3G data networks.
Multitasking gestures from the iOS 4 developer betas become public in iOS 5.
“iTunes Tone Store” will be introduced.
Hourly weather forecasts are also introduced, but with no widget on the home screen.
It also takes existing songs, ripped songs or downloaded songs and gets them upgraded to 256kb quality tracks. It’s $24.99 a year, DRM-free and to scan your library only takes minutes. Legal Tracks!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, iCloud! You can store photos, music, videos, contacts, mail and wirelessly pushes them to all your devices — automatically. You also get 5 GB free of storage when you download it.
Developers receive a seeded beta today, with public users of either iPad, or the current generation iPod touch/iPhone and it’s predecessor getting them in the fall.
Yay!!
